DC Tourism: 5 Ways to Enjoy Tourism in Washington D.C.
Washington D.C. is a one of a kind venue. Even with an entire week or two, it's hard to absorb all that Washington D.C. has to offer. Listed below however, are 5 things that tourists can truly enjoy:
1) Visit the White House
Make an early morning date to tour the most famous house in the United States. It's not hard to do since tickets are free and if you go in the off season (after Labor Day until about mid-March) you don't need tickets at all. In the off season the line begins at the White House's southeast gate. If you are waiting in the tour line before 12:00pm you will most likely get in. You can also receive “prep” info by stopping by the White House visitor's center before taking the actual tour. There is also the option of requesting a congressional led tour but for that special experience you must request tickets weeks (about 8-10) in advance.
2) Visit the International Spy Museum
Of all the museums on the National Mall the International Spy Museum is definitely the most stealthy option! Although this museum isn't free ($16/adult), it will keep you entertained with the history of spies, the technology of spies, spies in the movies, hands-on activities, scavenger hunts and varying speakers' series.
Make sure to plan your visit carefully as some of the spy activities do require additional costs.
3) Splurge on Food
The dining experiences available in D.C. are worth a little extra cash! The plethora of international cuisine is especially recommendable since D.C. is like an international “boiling pot.” The deluge of diversified ethnic edibles will tempt you in many of the city's most “happening” locations. I suggest authentic Spanish food with tapas-style cuisine. The “tapas” are small mini-dishes that are just small enough to eat a bit and move on to another taste of Spanish heaven without overeating. Tapas are usually some of the most affordable and delicious ethnic cuisine and is a great way to please everyone's palate and encourage great conversation.

4) Take a Jaunt on the Potomac
There is nothing like the great outdoors and D.C. has plenty to offer. The Potomac River is a great place to start. Whether you are on a paddle boat, a sailboat, a cruise or riding bicycles along a path by the river you can enjoy the outdoors, have fun with the family or restir those romantic embers.
5) Cultural Events
Washington D.C. is full of potentially impactful cultural events. From art museums to cultural festivals and from dance concerts to theater, you can find and experience the culture that stirs your soul in Washington D.C. Simply go online and query your favorite fine art in combination with the name Washington D.C. (i.e. Art, Washington D.C.). Then, plan your date or event accordingly. |
